Next to this lake there are Bednes and Vaidaiņa swamps. There are varied kind of plants and animals, particulary birds.
Burgu meadows cover an area of 183 ha. One of the sites of the European Natura 2000 protected network in Latvia. Burgas meadows are a refuge for many open-air plants and animals. In floodplain meadows lives 12 protected bird species. Meadows have various butterflies – in total – 167 species.

The manor house was built in the style of historicism, from 1912 to 1914. The castle is the youngest castle in Latvia. The Veckārķi castle was built shortly before World War I. The palace was designed to build 100 rooms, but – during the war castle was used as a source of building materials.
Ērģeme ruins are a national monument of history and archeology. Have been built around the year 1320. The castle is built of the local boulders, bricks and lime mortar. The outer wall of the castle forms a regular quadrilateral, each with a length of 70 meters. The castle is a convent-type castle with two large fortification towers. The castle was surrounded by ditches filled with water. The front with the central part was linked by a lift bridge.
Legend says: Ancient times Estonians came to Latvia to pillage. Those soldiers` wifes accompanied them and stayed near Pedeles river to wait for their coming back. Wifes waited for a long time, but husbands didn’t come, so they went into the river because of deep sorrow. Only one promised to wait all her life. A wife waited and cried till her soul and body became a stone which is in that place where sat that wife.
Length 4,8 m, width 4,8 m, height till 1,5 m. Name “Valka` stone” to secular stone had given by researchers. Stone is cleaved probably for cemetery plates, so it has many cracks. Stone has a status “secular stone”, when its capacity is over 10 m3 and Valka` stone has 18 m3.
Lake Zāģezers area is 13ha and average depth – 1.4 m. Around the Zāģezers there is forest. Also there is a beach with swimming area, beach volleyball fields, camp-fire place, cabins for changing, toilets.
Near from lake Zāģezers is source where people from Valka are going to get pure water. In 2009 was competition about name of this source and citizens were offered many versions and it was named “Zāģavots”.
