On June 11th, as part of the Valga-Valka twin town festival, a memorial time capsule with a message for future generations was solemnly placed in the new common central square of Valga and Valka.
“The project is very important for Valga – Valka, which is one city in two states, because historically it is one city that was divided in 1920. The border has been an obstacle to the development of both sides of the city,” wrote the heads of both municipalities in the message.
The visitors of the ceremony were addressed by Chairman of Valka Municipality Council Mr. Vents Armands Krauklis, Mayor of Valga Municipality Ms. Ester Karuse, Chairman of the the Estonian construction company AS “TREV-2 Grupp“ Mr. Sven Pertens and Head of the Secretariat at Estonia-Latvia Programme Mrs. Helena Järviste.
All involved parties expressed their appreciation of the work that already has done and are looking forward to the completion of the construction work, when the heart of Valga – Valka will be reborn as an attractive place for relaxations for the residents, families and guests of the twin town.
The total cost of the Valga-Valka Twin Town Center project is 5 303 109.34 EUR. The budget of the Valga Municipality Government is 2 118 766.33 EUR, of which the support of the Estonia-Latvia programme is 1 488 710.40 EUR. The budget of the Valka Municipality Council is 3 184 343.01 EUR, of which the grant from Estonia-Latvia programme is 1 511 289.19 EUR and the grant from the state budget of Latvia is EUR 88 899.36.
